Attract & Convert Your Ideal Excavation, Demo & Septic Jobs!
The excavation industry has been underserved for too long when it comes to quality marketing that drives consistent results to the bottom line. See the difference partnering with an excavation marketing agency that's dedicated to your business. Do you really want the "generalist marketers" to trial and error on your dime?

If you own an excavation or septic company, there is a good chance you have had this thought at some point: We just need more leads.
Maybe the schedule is starting to look a little thin. Maybe one crew has work while another has gaps. Maybe you are paying good people and expensive equipment is sitting still more often than you would like. Or maybe the phone is still ringing, but too many of those calls are for small jobs, people outside your service area, or homeowners who disappear after you send the estimate.
That can create a lot of pressure. When payroll, trucks, equipment payments, fuel, insurance, and overhead keep coming whether the phone rings or not, it is easy to assume that more leads must be the answer.
Sometimes they are.
But we have seen enough excavation and septic companies at Excavation Marketing Pros to know that more leads can also hide the real problem. A company can have plenty of inquiries coming in and still struggle to keep a predictable amount of profitable work on the calendar.
The problem is often not how many people are entering the business. It is what happens to those people once they get there.
A call gets missed. A homeowner waits too long for a response. An estimate goes out and nobody follows up. Past customers never hear from the company again. Old opportunities sit buried in a CRM or spreadsheet. Marketing continues month after month, but nobody can clearly say which leads actually became customers and how much revenue they produced.
Then the answer becomes, “We need more leads.”
That can get expensive fast.
Before you increase your advertising budget or go hunting for another lead source, it is worth taking a harder look at these five bottlenecks.
#1: Good Leads Are Coming In, but You Are Losing Them Too Early
Think about what happens when a homeowner needs septic or excavation work.
They may search Google, click an ad, look at a few reviews, visit two websites, and then call several contractors. If the problem is urgent, they may do all of that within 15 minutes.
Now imagine they call your company and nobody answers.
They may leave a voicemail, but there is a good chance they simply move on.
This is especially important with septic service. If sewage is backing up into a home or a tank is overflowing, the homeowner is not looking for a contractor to call next Tuesday. They want someone who can help them now.
Excavation projects are often less urgent, but the same basic behavior still applies. A homeowner may be trying to get three quotes for grading, drainage, a driveway, a septic installation, or land clearing. The company that responds first is not guaranteed to win the job, but it often gets the first real conversation.
This is why we believe lead response is part of marketing.
A Google Ad can do exactly what it is supposed to do. The homeowner sees it, clicks it, visits the website, and calls. If nobody answers and nobody follows up quickly, the marketing did not necessarily fail. The process after the marketing failed.
A strong company should know exactly what happens after a missed call. Does the homeowner receive a text? Who calls them back? How long does that normally take? What happens if they do not answer the callback? Is there another attempt later?
If the answer depends on who happens to be free that day, there is probably a leak.
That leak becomes even more expensive when you increase advertising. If the company already struggles to respond to 30 leads, sending it 60 may simply create twice as many missed opportunities.
More leads do not fix a weak response system. They expose it.
#2: You Are Measuring Leads Instead of Real Opportunities
Lead numbers are easy to understand, which is one reason contractors focus on them so heavily.
“We got 47 leads last month.”
That sounds useful, but the number by itself does not tell us much.
How many of those people actually needed a service you provide? How many lived inside your service area? How many had a project large enough to make sense for your business? How many were homeowners ready to take the next step?
There can be a major difference between a lead and a qualified opportunity.
Imagine an excavation company receives 50 leads. Five are looking for jobs. Four are vendors. Six are outside the company's service area. Another eight want small work the company does not perform.
The business did not really receive 50 opportunities.
It received 27.
That distinction matters because you can make bad marketing decisions when you look only at raw lead volume.
One marketing source might generate 40 leads at a low cost, while another generates only 20. It is tempting to declare the first one the winner.
But what if the 20 leads turn into 12 qualified opportunities and six jobs, while the 40 leads produce only three customers?
The second source may be far more valuable.
This is why we like to look beyond lead count and ask what happened next. How many people were qualified? How many booked an estimate or site visit? How many received a proposal? How many hired the company? How much revenue did those customers generate?
Those numbers get much closer to what the contractor actually cares about.
No excavation company owner wants 100 leads for the sake of having 100 leads. They want enough of the right opportunities turning into profitable jobs to keep the business moving forward.
That is a very different goal.
This is one of the most common problems we see, and it is understandable why it happens.
The contractor visits the property, looks at the work, puts together the estimate, sends it to the homeowner, and moves on to the next job.
Then everyone waits.
If the customer calls back, great.
If not, the assumption is often that they went with someone else or decided not to do the project.
Sometimes that is exactly what happened. But there are plenty of other reasons homeowners go quiet.
They may be waiting on another estimate. They may need to talk with a spouse. They may have gotten busy at work. They may be trying to figure out financing. They may still want the project but have moved it down the priority list.
Sometimes they simply forget.
A homeowner not responding does not always mean the answer is no. Often it means the conversation stopped.
That is why follow-up matters.
It does not have to feel aggressive or salesy. A simple message can reopen an opportunity.
“Hi John, I wanted to check in on the drainage estimate we sent over last week. Is the project still something you are looking to get completed?”
That is not pressure. It is good communication.
The bigger issue is making sure follow-up happens consistently instead of depending on someone remembering to do it.
A company may have tens of thousands of dollars in open estimates sitting inside its pipeline right now. Some of those homeowners may still buy. Yet the company is spending thousands more every month to generate new people without doing much with the ones who already raised their hands.
Before assuming you need more leads, look at your open estimates.
How many have been followed up with?
How many have not heard from your company since the proposal went out?
The answer may surprise you.
New customers are important, but they should not be the only source of future work.
A business becomes much more stable when it has several ways to generate opportunities, and some of the best ones may already exist inside your customer database.
Past customers know your company. They have already trusted you once. If you did a good job, you do not need to start the relationship from zero.
That matters for septic companies in particular. A customer who had a tank pumped or a repair completed may need service again in the future. A septic system should not become invisible to the homeowner the moment your truck leaves the driveway.
The company that stays in touch has a better chance of earning that future service.
The same principle applies to excavation companies. A homeowner who hired you for drainage may later need grading, a driveway, land clearing, or another project. A builder may have additional sites. A commercial customer may have recurring work.
You already paid something to acquire these customers, whether that cost was advertising, time, networking, or referrals.
Do not forget them after the invoice is paid.
Referrals are part of this too.
A homeowner may never need another septic installation, but their neighbor might. A builder who trusts you may refer you to another project. A property manager may know several people who need the type of work you perform.
Strong companies make it easy for happy customers to become promoters.
Reviews help that process.
A referral may tell someone that your company is good. The next thing that person often does is search your company online. If they find a strong Google profile, recent reviews, a professional website, and proof that you know your work, the referral becomes even stronger.
Your past customers, old leads, open estimates, referrals, and reviews are all part of your marketing system.
They are not separate from marketing just because you did not pay Google or Facebook to generate them.
This may be the biggest difference between a company that feels unpredictable and one that becomes easier to grow.
A lot of excavation and septic businesses are doing marketing.
They have a website.
They run Google Ads.
They may use Local Services Ads.
They post on Facebook.
They have a CRM.
They ask for reviews occasionally.
None of those things by themselves create a system.
A system means the pieces work together.
A homeowner sees your company online, contacts you, gets a quick response, becomes a qualified opportunity, books an estimate, receives follow-up, hires you, leaves a review, and potentially becomes a repeat customer or referral source.
That entire path matters.
The problem is that many companies spend nearly all their attention on the first step.
How do we get the lead?
Very little attention goes into what happens next.
That is why we believe excavation and septic marketing should be looked at as a full customer acquisition system, not simply an advertising campaign.
The system should help answer basic questions.
Where did the customer come from?
How quickly did your company respond?
Was the lead qualified?
Did an estimate happen?
Was the estimate followed up?
Did you win the job?
How much revenue did that customer create?
If you cannot answer those questions, it becomes hard to know whether your marketing is actually working.
You may know you spent $5,000 on advertising.
You may know you received 40 leads.
But if you cannot connect those leads to customers and revenue, you are still guessing.
This is where the idea becomes important.
More leads are not automatically better.
Imagine one excavation company receives 50 leads in a month. Because the owner and office staff are stretched thin, only 30 receive a real conversation. Fifteen estimates get scheduled and four projects are sold.
Another company receives only 30 leads. They respond quickly, qualify the opportunities, follow up consistently, and book 20 estimates. Eight projects are sold.
The second company had 40 percent fewer leads and twice as many customers.
That is why lead count by itself can be such a distracting number.
The first company may think the solution is to generate 75 leads next month.
But if the real bottleneck is poor response and follow-up, more leads may simply create a larger pile of missed opportunities.
The better move may be to fix the conversion process first.
Then, when you increase marketing, the business is prepared to do something useful with the additional demand.
One of the reasons contractors become frustrated with marketing is that they expect one source to carry too much weight.
Maybe referrals built the company for years.
Then referrals slow down.
Maybe Google Ads worked well for several months.
Then competition increases.
Maybe Local Services Ads were strong and suddenly lead volume changes.
That does not necessarily mean any one of these channels is bad. It means relying heavily on one source can make the business vulnerable.
A healthier pipeline can include several sources of work.
Paid search can capture homeowners already looking for help. Facebook can create awareness and demand. Organic search can bring in people researching services. Reviews can improve trust. Referrals can create warm introductions. Past customers can come back. Old estimates can turn into new jobs. Seasonal campaigns can help create demand before slower periods arrive.
These sources support one another.
The goal is not to find the one magical source that produces unlimited jobs forever.
The goal is to create enough ways for the right customer to find you, trust you, and move through the buying process that the business becomes less dependent on luck.
Excavation and septic businesses can be highly seasonal depending on the market and services offered.
Weather changes.
Construction schedules change.
Homeowner behavior changes.
Certain projects may slow down while others stay steady.
That makes planning important.
The worst time to start thinking about a winter slowdown is after the schedule is already empty.
A better approach is to look ahead.
What services are likely to stay strong over the next few months? Which jobs should you begin advertising now? Are there spring projects that homeowners start researching during the winter? Are there old estimates worth revisiting? Are there past customers who should receive a service reminder?
There is another side of seasonal planning that can be just as important.
Do not completely ignore marketing simply because you are busy.
We understand why contractors do it. If the schedule is full for six weeks, continuing to spend money on leads can feel unnecessary.
But the work you are completing today may have been sold weeks or months ago.
If marketing stops completely, the future pipeline can start shrinking even while everyone feels busy.
Then those scheduled jobs get completed, and suddenly there is not much behind them.
That is how businesses get stuck in the familiar cycle of feast and famine.
A more predictable company keeps an eye on what is happening now and what is likely to happen 30, 60, or 90 days from now.
Before increasing your advertising budget, take a look at your current system and ask yourself a few questions.
Are we answering and responding to the leads we already receive?
Are the people contacting us actually qualified opportunities?
Are we following up after estimates go out?
Are we staying in touch with past customers and old opportunities?
Can we clearly track where our customers and revenue are coming from?
If the answer to several of those questions is no, that is not necessarily bad news.
It may mean there is more opportunity inside your current business than you realized.
You may not have to double your lead volume to produce better results.
You may need to get more value out of the opportunities you are already creating.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more leads.
Every growing excavation or septic company eventually needs more people entering the pipeline.
But leads are only the beginning. The real goal is to have the right homeowners contact the business, get a quick response, become qualified opportunities, receive estimates, get consistent follow-up, hire you, leave good reviews, come back when they need you again, and tell other people about their experience. That is how a pipeline gets stronger.
At Excavation Marketing Pros, this is why we tend to look beyond advertising alone. We are a specialized firm, and our work is focused specifically on excavation and septic businesses. We have learned that two contractors in the same industry can have completely different bottlenecks.
One company may genuinely need more leads. Another may need someone answering the phone. Another may need better estimate follow-up. Another may have strong lead volume but no way to tell which marketing source is actually producing revenue.
The answer should fit the problem. That is also why we are big believers in building marketing around the individual business instead of forcing every company into the exact same system.
Before you spend more money trying to create more leads, take a hard look at what happens to the opportunities you already have.
Fix the leaks first. Then, when you increase your marketing, those new leads have a much better chance of turning into what you actually want: profitable work on the calendar.
Send us a message today to find out how Excavation Marketing Pros can help you fix the bottlenecks in your lead response, follow-up, and sales process so you can turn more opportunities into better jobs and build a more predictable way to grow.

I Do My Own Marketing In House: Why is that?
Is it the best use of your time as the CEO or for your in house team?
Do you like doing it? Is it profitable? Do you know your cost per lead? You would probably agree most excavation business owners are better equipped at doing excavation rather than marketing.
I Can't Grow Past Where I'm At/I Can Handle The Work I Got!: Mark Cuban said it best, "Sales Cures All Problems In Business." There's always pain in growth. With more income you can afford to hire the best talent for your business. The only way to get more income is to sell more services, buy better machines, invest in better systems and so on. One way to increase profitability and scale is by doing less excavation work. By actually restructuring your service offers based on your most profitable excavation services that you can knock out the fastest. By having us target your most profitable excavation work you can complete the fastest, you trim the fat and become a lean power house. If that makes sense, book a call with us.
How Long Will It Take To See Results Marketing My Excavation Company?: We can get most campaigns running in 7-10 business days. With some marketing like paid ads, the leads can start flowing in at that moment. But a transformation in your business will not happen over night. You'll see a custom plan based on your goals when you schedule your call.
I Tried A Marketing Agency Before/Lead Company/SEO Company [insert thing you tried here]: It's disappointing when that happens. Sorry to hear that. Did the company you worked with actually specialize in excavation and septic businesses? That's a major difference. They just aren't equipped because they don't have the specific data or experience in the industry like serving your type of business. So in turn they must trial and error everything on your dime... But not us!
