We Help Excavation Businesses Providing Septic Services To Grow Their Businesses🚀Through Effective Business & Marketing Systems⚙️

Most excavation and septic contractors do not need more random form fills, more missed calls, or more people shopping the lowest price. They need a steady flow of qualified opportunities for work their crews can perform profitably.
That is why Google Ads can be either one of the most useful tools in your marketing system or one of the fastest ways to waste money. Done poorly, PPC feels like holding flaming cash in your hand. Done correctly, it can put your company in front of homeowners and property owners when they are actively searching for a solution, then connect the right search to the right service page, the right follow-up, and ultimately the right job.
In the Excavation and Septic Profits Podcast webinar, Scott Andreasen breaks down the practical habits that separate an expensive Google Ads account from a real lead-generation system. The lesson is not that every contractor should spend more. The lesson is that every dollar needs a job to do.
Here's a full leads training Scott Andreasen did for excavation and septic contractors in October.
The first question is not, “How much should I spend on Google Ads?” The first question is, “Which jobs are worth buying leads for?”
A septic company that wants more pumping calls has a different economics problem than one trying to book system replacements, drainfield work, major repairs, or inspections that lead to larger scopes. An excavation contractor looking for large site preparation, drainage, driveway, grading, land-clearing, demolition, or utility work has a different opportunity than a contractor bidding small one-off jobs that consume travel, mobilization, and crew time.
The webinar’s recommendation is simple: use traditional Search PPC for high-value, high-margin services where one sold job can justify the cost of acquisition. For excavation, that often means protecting your PPC budget for work that is meaningfully above the small-job threshold. For septic contractors, that often means distinguishing between lower-ticket recurring service and larger installation, replacement, repair, or excavation-related opportunities.
This is not a reason to ignore lower-ticket services. It is a reason to choose the right channel and budget for them. Local Services Ads, organic local visibility, repeat-customer reminders, and other channels may be better suited to certain service calls. Search PPC should be deployed where it has the best chance to create real profit, not just activity.
Before expanding your budget, list the services that create the strongest combination of average job value, gross margin, close rate, crew capacity, and dependable demand. That list becomes the foundation of a better campaign.
Paid advertising is easier to manage when you stop looking at it as a monthly bill and start connecting it to the value of a sold job.
The webinar uses a straightforward illustration. If an average job is $10,000 and the gross profit margin is 50 percent, there is $5,000 of gross profit before overhead. That does not mean you should spend $5,000 to acquire that customer. It means you now have a practical ceiling to work from. Your actual target should leave room for overhead, risk, the cost of estimating, and the return you expect from your marketing.
This calculation becomes even more useful when you apply it to individual services. A campaign for a large septic replacement or grading project may support a very different cost per lead than a campaign for a low-dollar service call. If you do not know the average sold-job value and margin behind an ad group, you cannot tell whether an expensive lead is truly expensive or whether a cheap lead is actually costing you money.
Established excavation and septic contractors should also consider the value of the crew and equipment that will perform the work. A lead is not profitable simply because it turns into revenue. It must support the labor, equipment, transport, material, and management time required to complete the project well.
One of the fastest ways to make Google Ads less relevant is to place all of your services into one catch-all ad group. A person searching for land clearing should not see a generic ad that reads like it could be for septic pumping, driveway repair, demolition, and trucking all at once.
Google Ads works better when the search term, ad copy, landing page, and requested service all match. A property owner searching for “septic system replacement” should arrive at a page that explains septic replacement, shows the relevant proof, provides a direct next step, and gives your office the information needed to qualify the inquiry. A person searching for driveway installation or land clearing should see the same kind of relevance for that exact service.
This does not require an endless collection of tiny campaigns. It requires a thoughtful structure. Keep major services in distinct campaign or ad-group themes. Write ad copy that speaks to the customer’s actual problem. Build service-specific landing pages. Track which service lines create estimates, sold jobs, and margin.
When the message is precise, you are more likely to attract people who need the work you actually want to perform. You also give Google a clearer signal about who should see each ad.
The language your customers use in your county may be different from the language another contractor uses across the country. That is why broad national keyword data can be misleading.
The webinar highlights a common mistake: leaving Google Keyword Planner set to the entire United States. That may show a large search number, but it does not tell you how homeowners in your actual service area describe the problems they want solved.
Instead, run local research around the counties and markets you genuinely serve. Compare the terms people search for when they need septic maintenance, septic repair, system replacement, excavation, grading, drainage, driveway work, land clearing, demolition, or hauling. Local research helps you find the wording that matches your customer’s intent, not the wording you assume they use.
This research also helps your website and organic local SEO. If homeowners consistently search for a phrase you do not use on your service pages, Google Ads can reveal an opportunity to improve both your ads and your website content. The best marketing systems use paid and organic data together.
Not every search that includes the word excavation or septic represents a buyer. Someone looking for jobs, careers, training, associations, essays, do-it-yourself information, or unrelated equipment may click your ad if you do not actively filter those searches out.
Negative keywords are how you tell Google what you do not want. They are not glamorous, but they matter. Review the actual search terms that generated clicks. Add exclusions for terms that consistently attract people outside your target customer profile. Keep the list specific to your business and your market.
This matters even more when you run broad or exploratory campaigns. Broad matching can uncover useful demand, but it can also bring irrelevant traffic if the account is not monitored. A disciplined negative-keyword process protects your budget and helps the remaining traffic become more relevant.
The goal is not to eliminate every imperfect click. The goal is to avoid repeatedly paying for searches that are clearly not connected to profitable excavation and septic work.
Driving every paid click to your homepage is a common mistake. A homepage has to introduce your company, explain several services, and serve many different visitor types. A paid search visitor has already told you more than that. They searched for something specific.
Send them to a landing page built around that specific service. A high-performing page clearly names the service, speaks to the problem, describes the outcome, shows relevant reviews or project proof, and makes the next step obvious. The call button, estimate form, or request for a site visit should be easy to find without excessive scrolling.
For a septic replacement page, show that you understand the stress of a failed system and explain the process clearly. For a drainage page, show examples of the water problem you solve and what a correct repair can accomplish. For a land-clearing page, explain the property outcomes you provide, not just a vague promise of machine time.
The webinar also emphasizes mobile experience. Many local searches happen on a phone, so the page must load well, display the phone number clearly, and make the contact option simple to use. If a homeowner has to zoom, hunt for a form, or wait through a slow page, they will often go back to the search results.
A marketing campaign cannot fix a lead-response problem. If paid calls reach voicemail during business hours or web inquiries wait too long for a follow-up, you are paying for attention that another contractor will convert.
The webinar’s golden rule is direct: someone has to answer the calls or follow up with the leads. That means deciding who owns the first response, what information they collect, when an estimator is notified, and how the prospect moves into your CRM.
For a busy excavation or septic business, this does not require the owner to take every call. It requires a reliable system. Your office administrator, dispatcher, estimator, or answering process should know how to identify the service needed, confirm the address and service area, collect project details, and set the correct expectation for the next step.
Speed matters, but clarity matters too. A strong intake process helps separate a ready-to-buy homeowner from a poor-fit inquiry before your team spends hours on an estimate. It also gives your estimator enough context to start the conversation professionally.
Clicks, impressions, and even raw lead counts are not the finish line. The real question is whether a marketing source produces qualified estimates, sold jobs, and revenue that supports your margin goals.
The webinar recommends connecting web forms and calls to your CRM pipeline. Track the journey from new lead to qualified prospect, site visit, bid sent, and sold job. Use dynamic number insertion or call tracking where appropriate so you can distinguish an ad-driven call from an organic call. Then connect the outcome back to the source whenever possible.
This is what turns Google Ads from a guessing game into a feedback loop. When Google receives better conversion signals, it has a stronger chance to optimize toward the behavior you actually value. When your team can see the service, source, estimate amount, and final job result, you can decide whether to increase, improve, or reduce a budget based on evidence.

You do not need to wait for a perfect dashboard. Start with clean source tracking, a defined pipeline, and a weekly review of the jobs that came from paid campaigns. Over time, you will see which services, counties, keyword themes, and landing pages produce the work you want more of.
A lead that did not buy immediately is not always a bad lead. Some septic and excavation jobs require site visits, family discussions, financing decisions, permit questions, or planning around a construction schedule. If the estimate is sent and then forgotten, the marketing budget that created the opportunity is wasted.
Build consistent follow-up into your sales process. A short confirmation after an estimate, a clear explanation of the scope, a timely check-in, and automated SMS or email reminders can keep a real opportunity moving. The tone should be helpful, not desperate. Your prospect should understand what they are choosing, why the work is priced as it is, and what happens next if they move forward.
This is especially valuable for larger projects. The homeowner may be comparing several contractors, and the company that communicates clearly often has an advantage even when it is not the lowest bid.
Google Ads can create near-immediate visibility for searches that matter, but it works best alongside strong local SEO, a well-managed Google Business Profile, reviews, relevant service pages, project proof, remarketing, and a professional follow-up process.
Think of PPC as the controllable lead source you can turn up for the services that are ready to scale. Think of organic search, reviews, referrals, and your website as the assets that improve trust and reduce dependence on any one channel. Together, they create a more stable lead pipeline for excavation and septic contractors.
The goal is not to run ads because competitors are running ads. The goal is to build a campaign that sends qualified people to the right page, gives them a reason to contact you, gets them a fast response, and shows you which campaigns create profitable work.
