Scott Andreasen interviews Tim Wood of FujiClean about advanced septic treatment

Advanced Septic Treatment: FujiClean's Tim Wood on CEN5

November 02, 2026•7 min read

A homeowner may not think about their septic system until something goes wrong. For excavation and septic contractors, that makes the conversation before installation, and after the job is finished, especially important. What does the system do? Who will maintain it? How will the homeowner know when it needs attention?

On the Excavation and Septic Profits Podcast, host Scott Andreasen sat down with Tim Wood, FujiClean regional sales manager, to discuss advanced septic treatment, the CEN5 system, and the role of homeowner education. Wood's central message was straightforward: maintenance should be presented as part of responsible ownership, not as a reason to avoid a treatment technology.

Septic Maintenance Is Part of the Solution

Wood believes the onsite wastewater industry can do a better job explaining the value of maintenance. In the interview, he challenged the idea that a conventional septic system needs no attention while an advanced treatment system creates an unwanted service obligation.

“Maintenance is a good thing.”

Tim Wood, FujiClean regional sales manager

His point was not that every system requires the same work. It was that maintenance belongs in the conversation about all septic systems. He identified filter cleaning and septic tank pumping as examples of care for conventional systems, while advanced treatment systems have their own service requirements.

For contractors, the practical lesson is to explain the ownership plan alongside the installation. Homeowners need to understand who provides service, what the visits cover, and how pumping decisions are made. Presenting that information clearly helps them evaluate the complete system rather than judging it only by the installation price or the number of tanks.

Wood described long-term sustainability as an industry goal. That is a reason to discuss proper care, not a guarantee that a particular installation will last for a specified number of years.

What Tim Wood Demonstrated With the FujiClean CEN5

During the interview, Wood walked Scott through a demonstration unit of the FujiClean CEN5, which he identified as a 500-gallon-per-day model. He said that capacity commonly corresponds to a three- or four-bedroom application in many states. That observation should not be treated as a universal sizing rule. The proposed use, approved design, and local requirements determine whether a specific model is appropriate for a property.

Wood described wastewater entering a sedimentation compartment, where solids settle and fats, oils, and grease rise. The liquid then moves into an anaerobic treatment section with media that provides a surface for bacteria. From there, it enters an aeration compartment, where a blower supplies air for the treatment process.

He also explained how air is used to recirculate wastewater within the unit. In his demonstration, recirculation was part of the treatment process rather than a separate wastewater pump inside the treatment unit. That distinction matters: a description of the unit's internal operation does not establish that every complete site installation will be free of pumps or other equipment.

FujiClean's official product information distinguishes CE wastewater-treatment models from CEN nitrogen-removal models. Contractors should keep those model families and their approved specifications separate when explaining options. The CEN5 discussion in this interview is an introduction to the technology, not a substitute for current design documents, installation instructions, or project approval.

A Compact System Still Needs the Right Design

Wood said FujiClean's small footprint sometimes leads people to assume another tank must be installed ahead of the treatment unit. He described the company's residential testing and configuration as reasons not to make that assumption based on size alone.

The useful takeaway is to check the actual model requirements instead of judging the treatment process by the outside dimensions of the tank. FujiClean's CE5 product page, for example, states that no preceding septic tank is required for that model. That is model-specific guidance. It should not be generalized to every FujiClean model, commercial application, or variable-flow installation, or treated as a CEN5 design specification.

For an excavation or septic contractor, a compact treatment unit may be a useful option to discuss. Whether it fits a particular project still depends on the complete approved system, site conditions, loading, and local requirements. Neither a compact footprint nor an interview demonstration establishes that a system is suitable for every property.

Septic Pumping Should Follow Actual Conditions

One of the most important distinctions in this conversation is the difference between a service visit and a pumpout. Wood described operators visiting homeowners twice a year, and he offered a typical pumping estimate of three to five years during the interview. That estimate is not a universal maintenance schedule.

FujiClean's current FAQ guidance and CE5 materials emphasize checking sludge during service visits and making pumping decisions based on actual loading and use. The CE5 page describes semiannual maintenance, but CE5 guidance should not be used to prescribe the complete service program for every model.

Homeowners should follow the instructions for their installed model, the recommendations of their certified service provider, and applicable local requirements. Contractors should explain that inspection frequency and pumping frequency are different decisions. A scheduled service visit is an opportunity to assess the system, not proof that pumping is either due or unnecessary.

This is where clear communication matters more than a simple calendar promise. Tell the homeowner what will be checked and how the service provider will determine the next step. Avoid promising a fixed pumpout interval before the actual system conditions are known.

Homeowner Education Starts With the First Service Visit

Wood identified homeowner education as a gap across the industry, particularly when it comes to advanced septic treatment.

“The homeowner is the missing link as far as education in our entire industry.”

Tim Wood, FujiClean regional sales manager

He encouraged operators to have the homeowner present during the first maintenance visit so the professional can explain the system, show its components, and discuss what should and should not go down the drains. The value is the explanation, delivered by someone who understands the installed equipment and can answer questions about that property.

For septic contractors, that creates a practical opportunity to connect the installation to ongoing ownership. Use plain language. Explain the purpose of the equipment, the service arrangement, and the homeowner's responsibilities. Make sure the owner knows whom to contact with questions or concerns.

Wood also argued that installers and operators should recognize the sales role they already play. In this context, selling means helping a homeowner understand the value of proper treatment and care, not promising that a system can never have a problem.

Training and Service Support Matter After Installation

Wood described FujiClean's approach to training through local distributors, working with installers and operators. He emphasized the importance of choosing professionals who will actually show up and complete the maintenance work.

He also described the technology as designed for straightforward installation and maintenance. Those are his views from working with the product, not a promise that every project will be easy. The required training, approved installation procedures, and model-specific service instructions still matter.

For excavation and septic contractors evaluating advanced treatment options, the conversation should extend beyond the equipment itself. Understanding who supports the installation, who services the system, and how homeowners receive guidance is part of evaluating the full ownership experience.

Why Wood Sees Advanced Septic Treatment as the Future

Wood connected his outlook for advanced treatment to water protection and the ability of the industry to offer additional wastewater-treatment options.

“I think advanced treatment is the future of our industry.”

Tim Wood, FujiClean regional sales manager

He discussed places where he sees regulatory interest in advanced treatment and nitrogen reduction. These were his professional observations and expectations, not a statement that every state has the same current requirements. Contractors should verify the rules that apply to each project rather than treating an interview as regulatory guidance.

Wood also discussed energy use, treatment performance, and the benefits of FujiClean's design. Specific outcomes depend on the model, approved configuration, loading, operation, and maintenance. His remarks should not be read as a universal effluent guarantee or a promise of the lowest energy cost for every installation.

The broader lesson is that contractors need to be able to explain treatment options and their limitations. Knowing the technology is important. Helping a homeowner understand why a particular system is being recommended, and what it requires after installation, is equally important.
